Details
Shut the smsPULSE server down
In some versions of Windows the server console is not visible so the server can only be shut through services. Open the services panel and look for the entry that reads "smsPULSE Server", and click Stop. For servers where the console is visible, simply type the letter Q to shut the server.
Backup your existing installation
This is a simple task: just copy the entire smsPULSE directory to a new directory.
Uninstall your existing server
Use Windows Uninstall to remove the existing server. The process is quick and is not interrupted by prompts.
Ensure application databases are retained
If you had a fully configured smsPULSE server you would not like to repeat the process again. Therefore, the smsPULSE Uninstall process does not remove your data files or any configurations you have made before the upgrade. It is, however, useful to verify that the old data is retained and that the new installation will use it. To do so, go to the install directory, after the uninstall, and check that you still have the following files:
- data\names.nsf
- data\smspulse (entire directory)
If any of the above is missing, please copy them from the backup you have created above, ensuring that they are placed correctly in the data directory.
Install the new server
You are now ready to install the new server. Run the setup program and ensure you point to the same directory that the old version was installed in. The installation is quick and you are not asked more questions.
Start the server
Click on the server icon on your desktop to start the server. You can later start it as a service. Please note that you are likely to see a lot of error messages on the console. This is normal. You will need to stop the server again below and most of the error messages will no longer show.
Upgrade the applications
You now need to upgrade the design of your application software. The command to do so is issued to the server console: tell smspulse design
Once the software has upgraded the design of the application, please wait for 30 seconds as the database's signatures will be updated too. You will see a long list of text lines running through on the console. This is all normal. If you do not see the list appearing, please issue the sign command yourself by typing, at the console: tell smspulse sign
Restart the server for the final time
OK, you are almost done. Restart the server by quitting it first. If you still get some Java related errors, stop the server again and restart Windows.
